Okay! Enough with all the rules, let’s play! On my site today, I’m hosting Jessika Fleck, a fellow Swoon Squad author!
Jessika Fleck is a writer, unapologetic coffee drinker, and knitter–she sincerely hopes to one day discover a way to do all three at once. Until then, she continues collecting vintage typewriters and hourglasses, dreaming of an Ireland getaway, and convincing her husband they NEED more kittens. She has lived all over the U.S. from Hawaii to Vermont, but currently calls Illinois home. She resides there with her sociology professor husband and two daughters where she’s learning to appreciate the beauty in cornfields and terrifyingly large cicadas. BEWARE THE NIGHT is her second published work for young adults.
On the island of Bellona, life is peaceful–as long as the citizens dutifully worship the Sun, which protects them from all harm. Sixteen-year-old Veda knows that keeping the Sun happy will protect her and her grandfather from the Night, the dangerous people who snatch innocent citizens from their beds under the cover of darkness, never to be seen again. As long as Veda follows the rules, she will be safe.
But when Veda’s grandfather is offered up as the next sacrificial offering to keep the Sun’s favor, she starts to see that the safety she’s been promised comes at a dangerous price. Maybe there is more to fear above than there is below.
With a mysterious young man, Dorian, at her side, Veda has to figure out if the scary bedtime stories she grew up hearing are real–or dangerous lies.
In her sixteen years growing up on the island of Bellona, Veda has lived a life of hard work and fear. But as a member of the Basso class, she’s learned to stay under the radar and to move like the shadows who hunt her while illegally roaming the island after dark. Her weapon of choice? A fishing pole. Veda is protective of her grandfather, and fiercely dedicated to her forbidden friendship with Nico, a member of the Dogio class. She’s all earthen tones and fishing trinkets and small blessings from the altar where she prays, with hints of yellow like the Sun she worships to bright touches of silver like the moon she both fears and is unconscionably drawn to.
Nico is Veda’s best friend since childhood. She’s the one person he can truly be himself around without fear of judgement or expectation. He’s loyal to his family, respectful of those in charge, and ever torn between duty and conscience. Nico is reds and blacks and golds. He’s at constant odds with himself, to the point it often feels like he’s split in two. All heart and soul, Nico is the golden petal of a sunrise flower and the red sand of the hourglass.
The Island of Bellona exists in dualities. Sun and moon. Light and dark. Land and sea. Basso and Dogio. Imperi and Night. There is nothing surrounding the island far as the eye can see and then some. It’s self-sustaining but also very much at the mercy of its people and the Sun they worship. It’s shadows and sunrays, waves and sand, peace and war, death and life.
Doesn’t this book sound amazing? I can’t wait to read it.
And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Jessika Fleck, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 4. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the blue team and you’ll have the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
