I’ve been keeping a secret …
My book is going to be published by Swoon Reads under Feiwel and Friends, an imprint of Macmillan!
You guys. Seriously. I have no words to express how ridiculously happy this makes me! As many of you know, publishing is a crazy-hard industry to break into and it’s not like my path to publication has been a walk in the park.
I’ve been writing for years. I’ve sent out hundreds of queries. I’ve gotten SO CLOSE so many times. I almost signed with a couple of different agents. I received an offer from a small press, but ended up passing on it. The agent I *did* ultimately sign with ended up leaving the industry. I kept hitting brick wall after brick wall, and I heard “sorry, but no” more times than I can count. The interest was there, people loved my book and they had a lot of praise for it, but it all ended the same way. There were definitely times I felt like giving up.
It was during one of those times I decided to submit my novel to Swoon Reads. My agent at the time had just let me know she was leaving the industry, so I was at a crossroads. My novel hadn’t even gone on submission to editors yet and I didn’t want to give up on it before it even had a chance. But I wasn’t itching to jump back into the query trenches quite yet to search for another agent (can you blame me?).
I’d heard nothing but amazing things about Swoon Reads, so I went for it. For those of you who don’t know, Swoon Reads is a different approach to publishing, where there’s a lot of reader participation and crowdsourcing. Readers rate books they like, and if a book gets enough attention, the editorial board at Swoon Reads will take a look. If the board falls in love, they’ll offer a standard Macmillan contract.
CNN called it the book version of American Idol, which makes me feel like a rockstar…
Even though, as I write this, I’m in my PJs, my hair is greasy, and I’m not wearing any makeup … But hey, still pretty glam, amiright? 😉
After I submitted it, I tried not to get my hopes up. My pulse would skyrocket any time the statistics showed someone was reading my book. I’d try to keep it cool, even when I saw it was a trending manuscript on the site. But then Swoon Reads emailed me, wanting to set up a phone call, and I was a nervous wreck for about a week and half. (Yeah, that’s how far away the call was. Torture, I’m telling you).
And now – Confetti! Cupcakes! Chocolate! I can finally share the news! (And let me just say, a month and a half of having to keep this a secret has been very, very difficult!). I’m SO thrilled to be part of the Swoon Squad and I can’t wait to share my book with you all. I feel like the Swoon Reads community is everything I’ve been wanting in publishing, and it’s so welcoming and friendly and enthusiastic and ALL THE GOOD THINGS. It’s even better than I’d hoped for.
So now, I’m going to go dance like it’s no one’s business. I’ll probably eat a lot of ice cream too, because that’s the way I roll. Hugs all around!
