People asked me why writing YA was so hard for me, and why I breathed a sigh of relief when I started writing children’s books. Well, here’s one of the reasons: Deus ex machine. I would get my characters into problems, and then magically, something would happen that would get them out of it. I never made the characters work at it, which is perhaps why they always seemed just as surprised as I was when the bad guy stubbed his toe or their long-lost missing knight in shining armor happened to appear out of nowhere to save the day.
Here’s the thing though, while this random plot occurrence may have you (the author) jumping for joy at your brilliance, in reality, your readers think you just look like a toad:
